There’s a specific kind of pain that doesn’t have a good name yet.
It’s not the pain of a spouse who yells at you. It’s not the pain of a spouse who walks out. Those hurt, but at least they’re honest. You know where you stand. You can point at it, name it, and deal with it.
I’m talking about the spouse who smiles in your face. The one who laughs at your jokes. The one who tells everybody at church what a good man you are. And then goes right back to living like you’re the enemy.
That’s the Judas spouse. Betrayal with a kiss.
And the reason nobody talks about it is because from the outside, it looks like nothing’s wrong. Your conversations are pleasant. If somebody recorded us talking, you’d think we were the sweetest couple in Hampton Roads. You’d say, “Man, you two really love each other, don’t you?”
The conversations are wonderful. It’s everything else that’s horrible.
What Actually Made Me Write This
Let me back up.
I was talking to my son the other day — joking around, because I use a lot of comedy, that’s just how I teach. I’m telling him that when he gets to high school, he’s got to take care of himself. Brush his hair. Handle his business. Because kids will joke you, and Norfolk is a little tough, even at a Christian school.
So I’m playing it up. I’m telling him, “Man, the girls used to pay attention to me all the time.”
Which is a lie, by the way. I didn’t get any attention in high school. Didn’t have a girlfriend the whole four years. Things picked up after graduation — but that’s a different post.
The point is, I’m encouraging my son. And she’s sitting there laughing. Ha ha ha. Nice. Warm. Present.
Then I’m heading down the steps to go to work, and she calls out — you better not be out there being too attractive to the girls.
And I laughed. But inside I stopped cold.
Why do you care?
Why do you care about that, when you don’t want to touch me? When you’ve got me out here starving, and I’ve invited you — repeatedly, openly — into a better relationship in every single way?
That’s not jealousy. Jealousy comes from wanting something. That was something else. That was ownership without investment. That was a hand on the leash of a man she has no intention of feeding.
That’s the kiss on the cheek.
I Wasn’t Even Asking for Love
Here’s the part I want people to hear, because it’s the part that gets skipped.
I got to a place where I wasn’t asking for romance. I lowered the bar all the way to the floor and said: fine. Let’s just be a team.
We might have a bad relationship. Okay. But let’s help each other out anyway. Let’s make some money. Let’s work hard. Let’s be smart. Let’s take care of our son. Let’s secure the house.
I might not even like you right now. Let’s still build something.
You’re looking at this website. You can ask yourself whether any of that is happening.
She had two days off. Two full days. She didn’t do anything but make a mess and not clean up after herself. And I want to be honest with you about my method — I intentionally didn’t do anything in the house for those two days. Not out of pettiness. I wanted to see what she would do on her own.
Nothing. That’s what she did.
If I start working, she’ll do a little bit. A token amount. Never close to what I do. And that’s the tell right there — because it’s not real. It’s a response to being watched, not a response to loving somebody.
And then there’s the thing that makes me laugh so I don’t lose my mind: you better not go out there and get no fast food. But you don’t cook at home. How does that work? Where exactly is the food?
That’s not a rule. That’s a leash.

I asked the AI a straight question and got a straight answer. Here’s what came back.

That last part is what I want you to sit with. The cure for duplicity is transparency. Which means if your spouse won’t be transparent, they’re not confused, or tired, or stressed. They’re choosing.
Judas Was Living Two Lives
Now let’s go to the source, because Scripture already gave us the blueprint.
Judas was not an outsider. That’s the whole thing. He was in the ministry. He was out there with the other eleven doing the work — healing, serving, calling Jesus Lord and Master and Teacher right out in the open. If you’d taken a photo of the group, he’d have been in it, smiling.
That was life number one.
Life number two was with the Pharisees. And let’s be clear about something people gloss over — he wasn’t helping them for free. He got paid. Thirty pieces of silver, which scholars generally place at roughly a year’s wages for a common laborer at the time.
A year’s wages to hand over a good man. And not just hand him over to anybody — to hand a fellow Jew over to Rome. To the occupier. To the most brutal execution machine in the ancient world. This is a man living under that occupation, and he still made that trade.
That’s not a bad day. That’s not a moment of weakness. That’s a man running a second life alongside the first one.
And that’s exactly what a Judas spouse does. They show you one thing and do another. You will find things out about them and think, I never knew you felt like that. I never could have pictured you doing that.
You didn’t miss it because you’re dumb. You missed it because there was a whole other life running that you were never shown.
The Detail That Nobody Catches
Here’s the part I don’t think you can fully appreciate unless you’ve lived with this.
At the Last Supper, Jesus says out loud: one of you is going to betray me.
Judas is sitting right there.
And he acts like Jesus is talking about a bowling outing next week. “Yeah, we’ve got that thing coming up, I want all the guys there, it’s going to be fun.”
He’s got his bread in his hand. He’s dipping it in the dish. He knows what he’s about to do. He knows the man across the table just described him precisely. And nothing on his face moves.

I’m going to say this as gently as I can: that is not normal. There’s something deeply unwell about the ability to sit at a table, be described accurately as a traitor, and keep eating.
But that is the exact behavior I live with. I can talk about it. I can expose it. I can put it on a website. And the response is a shrug. Okay. Whatever. When you complain about me, nobody’s going to believe you anyway. I’m going to keep acting like I love you, and nobody will ever know but you.
That’s the Judas spouse in one sentence.
Only One Person at That Table Knew
Peter had to ask. He didn’t know. John didn’t know. Nobody at that table knew, and these men had walked with Judas for three years.
Only Jesus knew.
That’s why this hurts the way it does. Because everyone around you looks at your spouse and sees the sweetest person alive. Why are you angry at her? Why would you say that about him? They’re wonderful.
And you’re standing there holding an experience nobody else can verify.
You are not crazy for seeing what other people can’t see. You’re just the only one at the table with a clear view.
The Charger Story
Small story. Big principle.
If I need the phone charger she’s using, she’ll pull it out of the wall and hand it to me. Look at me — serving you.
Baby, I can unplug a charger. I’m a grown man with functioning arms. I don’t need you to hand me the charger. I need you to do the things I actually asked you to do.
She won’t take a broom to her own popcorn on the floor. But she’ll hand me a charger from the couch and call it submission.
Jesus said it plain: “If you love me, keep my commandments.” (John 14:15)
Not: if you love me, perform one small convenient gesture and then continue disobeying everything else.
Token service is not service. It’s a receipt for a transaction that never happened. And the reason it stings isn’t the charger. It’s that she knows exactly what real help looks like — which is how she knows precisely what to substitute for it.
That’s a slap in the face with a smile attached.
What I Actually Want
I want to say this clearly, because I don’t want anybody reading this to think I’m just venting.
You could be cooking. You could be cleaning. You could be organizing the things we both know need organizing. You could be taking weight off my plate. You could be nurturing your son. Teaching him. Leading him.
He needs a mother, not a roommate.
That’s the ask. That’s the whole ask. And the refusal isn’t laziness — laziness is passive. This is active. Actively working against everything that makes your husband whole while telling everyone how much you love him.

That line about asymmetry is the one I needed to read. One person being transparent while the other performs isn’t half of a healthy marriage. It’s one exposed person and one hidden one. And I’ve been the exposed one for a long time.
How to Spot a Judas Spouse
Pulling it together. Not one of these alone — the pattern.
They are wonderful in public and absent in private. The gap between how they treat you in front of people and how they treat you alone is the whole diagnosis.
Their words and their actions run on separate tracks. They’ll agree with everything you say and change nothing. Agreement costs nothing. Change costs something.
They substitute tokens for obedience. The charger. The five minutes of cleaning that starts when you start. Small visible gestures that stand in for the actual thing you asked for.
They control what they don’t want. Don’t be too attractive out there. No investment, full ownership.
They don’t flinch when exposed. You can name it directly and they’ll shrug. That’s not innocence — that’s confidence that the audience is on their side.
They say the true thing once and take it back with their life. I wouldn’t blame you for wanting a divorce. Said once, meant never, and never acted on. They could leave any day. They don’t.
Nobody believes you. By design. Only one person at that table knew.
The Word for the Judas Spouse
“These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” — Isaiah 29:13, quoted by Jesus in Matthew 15:8
That’s the whole thing in a sentence. Written thousands of years ago about people who showed up to worship, said the right words, and had hearts pointed in a different direction entirely.
God has always been able to tell the difference between the mouth and the heart. And so can you — that’s why you’re reading this. That’s why you can’t shake the feeling even when everybody around you says you’re being unfair.
You’re not imagining it. You’re just seeing what only one person at the table can see.
Where I Go From Here
I’ll be honest with you about my own position, because I’d be a hypocrite otherwise.
I’ve mostly stopped putting this on social media. I’m not out there posting about her anymore. What I share now is my content — my blogs, my videos, my work — because I want to help people, and I want to build a real royal house. Not a photo of one.
That’s why Royal House Chat exists. Not to air out one marriage. To give language to something a lot of people are living inside without a vocabulary for it.
If you’re in it: name it accurately. You cannot fix a problem you’re describing wrong. This is not a communication problem. Communication is the one thing that works fine. This is a character problem showing up as a communication style.
Stop lowering the bar to find the floor. I lowered it all the way to “let’s just be teammates” and got nothing. At some point, the repeated lowering stops being generosity and starts being data collection.
Get outside eyes. A pastor, a counselor, somebody who can see both of you. The isolation is the weapon. Break the isolation.
Take care of your son. Because he’s watching, and he’s learning what a marriage is supposed to look like from the one in front of him.
And keep this in your pocket: Judas ran his double life all the way to the end. But the story didn’t end at the betrayal. It ended three days later with something Judas never saw coming.
